TOWARDS MULTIPLE PHILOSOPHIES OF MUSIC EVOLUTION
The New Lexicon seeks neither to codify a universal theory of music evolution nor to determine in advance what legitimate musical change must be. A field concerned with evolution must remain responsive to phenomena that differ in scale, history, medium, environment, and social position. Its concepts must be precise without becoming totalising, open to evidence without confusing measurement with neutrality, and capable of addressing both cumulative patterns and singular events.
The programme aims to establish conditions under which multiple philosophies of music evolution may emerge: philosophies generated through research and development, sharpened through critique, tested against evidence and use, and revised through dialogue. Such philosophies may disagree about musical origins, units of change, mechanisms of transmission, the relation between biology and culture, the status of computational models, the agency of technology, or the meaning of survival and loss. Their value need not lie in convergence, but in their capacity to clarify what is at stake when change is named, measured, explained, designed, encouraged, or resisted.
To develop a new lexicon is to become more accountable for the futures our concepts and systems help produce. It is to ask what models preserve, what platforms amplify, what tools render obsolete, which agents technologies empower, and which possibilities research agendas exclude. Researchers and developers do not stand outside musical evolution: through categories, methods, prototypes, infrastructures, and institutions, they participate in its direction.
The residency begins from this responsibility. It invites participants to examine the histories embedded in their work, test the consequences of their assumptions, and develop forms of inquiry and technology capable of supporting more plural, intelligible, and responsible musical futures.
